Whether you’re looking to learn how to ride or just want to ride better, the Motorcycle Safety Foundation offers a ton of classes to get you up to speed. You can check the availability of courses in your area on the MSF website: http://www.msf-usa.org.
Trust us, this is way, way better than getting lessons from your Uncle Crash.
Basic RiderCourse (BRC)
Prerequisites: You should be able to ride a bicycle, and you must be of legal age to operate a motorcycle on the street. Depending on the state, you may need a driver’s license and/or motorcycle permit.
The Basic RiderCourse is an entry-level, learn-to-ride class that takes around 15 hours over two or three days. About 5 hours are devoted to learning activities in the classroom, and around 10 hours of hands-on practice are included. Training motorcycles are provided. Successful completion may lead to a waiver of the DMV motorcycle license skill test and an insurance discount.
Basic RiderCourse — Small Group
Prerequisites: Same as the BRC.
This is a BRC with 6 students instead of the usual 12, providing more individualized instruction. It’s for riders who want more attention and coaching than in a standard class.
Basic RiderCourse — Tutoring
Prerequisites: You must have spent some time in a BRC. Permission from the site RiderCoach and/or site administrator is required. May also require an additional fee.
This RiderCourse provides individualized, one-on-one instruction and coaching. It’s designed for riders who need more time for some exercises than a regular BRC provides.
Basic RiderCourse — Extra Practice
Prerequisites: You must have recently completed a BRC.
This is a half-day class for riders who completed a BRC, whether or not they passed. It’s designed to reinforce basic control skills, so it’s good for riders who have completed a BRC and haven’t had time to practice.
Basic RiderCourse — Expanded Edition
Prerequisites: You should be able to ride a bicycle, and you must be of legal age to operate a motorcycle on the street. Depending on the state, you may need a driver’s license and/or motorcycle permit.
This class is for students who want a more extensive Basic RiderCourse, and it includes both classroom and on-motorcycle instruction. There are 2 classroom sessions totaling 8 hours, and 3 on-motorcycle sessions totaling 13 hours. Like the regular BRC, this course helps new riders begin developing and practicing the mental and motor skills that are important for safe street riding.
Advanced RiderCourse
Prerequisites: You must have a valid motorcycle permit, license, or endorsement, and you have to provide your own safe, street-legal motorcycle.
A one-day course for riders with basic skills, this class focuses on more in-depth riding techniques than the BRC. It includes activities that emphasize personal risk management and self-assessment strategies, along with riding exercises that focus on cornering, braking, and swerving.
For permit holders, this course may be used as a license waiver course, if permitted by state regulations. Riders in this category would be required to successfully complete a knowledge and skill test. For riders who already have a motorcycle license or endorsement, the testing portions of the course are optional.
Advanced RiderCourse — Extra Practice
Prerequisites: You must have completed the Advanced RiderCourseSM, and you must provide your own safe, street-legal motorcycle.
This is a half-day course for riders with basic skills. It consists of riding exercises used in the standard Advanced RiderCourse.
Military Motorcycle RiderCourse
Prerequisites: You must be affiliated with a military branch and have permission to enroll.
This class is sometimes known by the acronym “MILMO” among the military. Students learn to ride on the street and on the dirt, as well as participating in tactical off-road exercises. The course includes the Basic RiderCourse, DirtBike Basic RiderCourse, Trail Riding RiderCourse, and tactical off-road exercises. The ATV Safety Institute’s ATV RiderCourse may also be included.
Military SportBike RiderCourse
Prerequisites: You must have a valid motorcycle license or endorsement, and you must be affiliated with a military branch and have permission to enroll. Use of a sportbike is required.
A one-day course for experienced sportbike riders, this class provides more in-depth riding techniques and skills than the BRC and ARC. The classroom activities emphasize personal risk management and self-assessment strategies, and the riding exercises focus on cornering, braking, and swerving.
DirtBike Basic RiderCourse
Prerequisites: You must be able to ride a bicycle. Class may be limited to specific age groups.
This is a one-day class for people who want to learn about riding off-road motorcycles. There’s no formal classroom segment — all activities are conducted primarily in a dirt lot.
Trail Riding RiderCourse
Prerequisites: You must have completed the DirtBike Basic RiderCourse or have basic off-road skills, and you should provide your own safe dirt bike.
An extension of the DirtBike Basic RiderCourse, this half-day class uses existing trails to provide learning experiences for dirt bike riding. It stresses using proper judgment to ensure that your skills are adequate for given environments.
Introduction to Scooters
Prerequisite: You must be able to ride a bicycle. Depending on the state, you may need a driver’s license. You may provide your own scooter, but it should be no more than 200cc and in safe operating condition.
This is a half-day familiarization course that provides introductory scooter information and riding practice in an off-street, paved area. It is not a license waiver course. There’s no formal classroom segment; all riding and safety discussions are completed in the riding area.
SMARTrainer Class — Traffic Awareness
Prerequisites: You should have some riding experience and be of legal age to operate a motorcycle on the street.
This is a classroom and SMARTrainer experience that includes advanced street strategies, along with rider perception and awareness training. This course includes 3 hours of class time combined with a 1-hour, RiderCoach-led SMARTrainer lab experience.
