Nowadays, everybody uses playlists to describe everything: their mood, their favorite city, their gut-wrenching breakup with the girl they knew wasn’t really into them but might have come around eventually. So instead of saying “I feel sad,” you could say, “I listened to Portishead all day,” and everybody would know what you mean.
I’m trying to come up with my first playlist entry for RockMoto. It’s pouring in SoCal today, but being from the east coast, I actually like gray days like these. I’ve ridden a lot in the rain too – some scary situations, some benign and some pretty damn funny. I’m trying to come up with a good playlist for one of the more absurd rain rides I’ve had. I wasn’t listening to music at the time, but if I were, it would have been kind of mellow and maybe jazzy. The kind of music that makes you feel like everything’s going to be okay, even when you can’t see through sheets of rain and you’re trying like hell to stay upright on the road. I mean, when I’m freaked out, Gorilla Biscuits isn’t going to help. I’m talking about a little Nina Simone, a little Billie Holiday. I can think of a couple songs by Groove Armada and BT, too, that make me feel like all’s right with the world. Or, at least, that I can get through the times when all’s not okay.
Anyway, if you’re interested in reading about the ride, I’m posting it in our Two-Wheel Tales section and calling it “Grit and Bear It.” And if you have a good playlist for any kind of ride or mood or activity, please use the form on the “Submit a Playlist” page to send it in. We’re always looking for cool new music, and, frankly, some of us just don’t get out much these days. JP
